New York City: There’s tang bao here

On Sunday night, I arrived in New York with Galen, a friend I made in Wuhan that just happens to live and study in New York. The train ride, which I’ll blog at a later date (Thursday perhaps), brought us into Times Square to crowds, heat, and crazy-large advertisments. After stopping in Galen’s packed to the brim apartment, we took an hour ride out to Queens to meet my housing for the night, another Wuhanren named Lydia.

When we got there, we found out she was busy and her apartment was full. Why were we here then?! Oh right, we came here also for the legitimate Chinese food. We were able to order my favorites yue xiang rou si (fish flavored pork or shredded pork with garlic sauce) and tang bao (soup filled dumplings). I forgot to photograph these delights and my delight at eating them, but suffice to say, both are true. I was happy enough to forget that I had taken an hour train just to take the same hour train back. Also, I shocked the waitress by asking for the bill in Chinese.

After that, I called and tried to guilt trip Lydia into at least coming outside to say hi. She topped that, taking us into a KTV place and getting us a bomb, VIP table. We didnt actually sing, save for the half of “Yellow Submarine” that I dropped on awing Lydia and Galen. I made fun of Lee Hom and dropped a little Chinese here and there, like a language seasoning (good or bad metaphor: leave your judgement in the comments). We discussed Soho (the bar, not part of NY) and the bars of Wuhan. This night made me feel like I was back in Wuhan, if just for one night.

Have accidentally had a night where you slipped back in time to another period of your life?
